A large number of emails received on or after 1st January 2010 are being falsely identified as spam and tagged as *****SPAM***** in the subject line or being deleted before reaching your inbox (depending on the spam filter settings for the email account)
This issue has been caused by our hosting provider not having up to date email filtering rules. There is an old 'future date check' of 2010 or later which should have been replaced before the start of 2010 with a check of 2020 or later. Our hosting provider has been alerted to the fault and please understand that we are doing all we can to get the issue resolved. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused and we will post an update here when the issue is resolved. (Saturday, 02 January 2010 21:37)
UDATE 1 - Sunday, 03 January 2010 00:17 It turns out that the issue is not with our hosting provider but with the people behind the anti-spam software (Apache). Although they fixed the issue in June 2009 they forgot to make the update available and only realised when email servers all over the world started falsly identifying spam yesterday. This is now making the news and being referred to as the 'SpamAssasin 2010 bug' or 'Tenth anniversary of the Y2K bug'. Apache have now released the update, however it make take several hours or days to become effective.
UDATE 2 - Sunday, 03 January 2010 18:48 I am very sorry to have to report nearly 24 hours after alerting our hosting provider (Freezone internet) to this email issue it remains unresolved.
Please accept my apologies for the impact this is having on you and your business.
As stated previously I have identified the cause of the issue as a known fault in the current version of Apache SpamAssassin and given our hosting provider this information, even providing details of the fix. Despite my efforts and several emails back and forth with them they have still not taken any corrective action. As a result emails will still be arriving in your inbox tagged with *****SPAM***** or deleted before reaching your inbox depending on the SpamFilter settings configured for your mailbox.
As promised I will continue to keep you updated with the progress on resolving this issue. |
